Well you could have fooled me! You spotted an error that has been the bane of my existence for 2 weeks. You were correct about the ‘ //WHERE/SHARE_NAME’ format. When I first started working on this, I went into my Synology NAS and set up my shared folder and I was going to use NFS (which I never figured out). At the bottom of the page there was a note that said, ‘ Mount Path: /volume1/homes’ and that is what I started using on everything. After pulling my hair out for almost two weeks and reading a crap-ton, I ran across something that made me try /ip address/homes/ and that was the first time I was able to mount it.I am not an expert on mounting things, but I thought it was '//WHERE/SHARE_NAME', not what is after the 'path' parameter in the smb, conf on the server.
After that I started trying to make the mount persistent. I will give this latest information you sent a try as soon as I get back in front of my Pi. Thanks again!
