Never been tested on Gentoo AFAIK, but sdm does what you want and a LOT more.

It will definitely simplify configuring your network, enabling SSH, expanding to fill the disk when burning, not expanding to fill the disk when burning, adding a partition at the end of the disk after burning, etc.
Hi, very impressive project - a real Swiss army knife! I'm feeling the strapline about "being nice to [my] future self" :D

I notice in the docs you list `systemd-container` as a dependency for img customisation but elsewhere I saw mention of "systemd or chroot" - another Gentoo peculiarity is we don't use systemd (by default) so that might be pivotal :(

I could certainly see myself using this if able. For the purposes of this thread, though, it's kind of a different tier to "throw a couple of files onto the boot partition" if you get my drift. Above all I feel that as long as RpiOS is going to have the capabilities it does (the "cheatcodes") then they deserve to be itemised properly somewhere that new/prospective users can find them. I fear that as they are already "stuffed down the sofa" it's all too easy that one day they just quietly disappear altogether.
Yep, it's definitely a swiss army knife kind of tool. It can do a lot and is easily extensible.

sdm does like to use systemd-container (systemd-nspawn specifically) but you can ask it to use chroot with the "--chroot" switch.

The sdm installer might choke on gentoo (uses apt and these packages: binfmt-support gdisk keyboard-configuration parted qemu-user-static rsync systemd-container uuid, but first blush says that you're sufficiently knowledgeable to whack it into submission. Or, if you're seriously interested in using it, LMK and I'll provide you with an apt-less version. Do gentoo package names conform with those in debian/apt?
