Audio is breaking up at the highest level, so likely a power issue. Like hippy said, could be the that one jumper isn't plugged in all the way and, hence, reduces its current capacity. Or the cells are old, or just can't deliver anyway. Power equals current squared time resistance, P = I * I * R. If you do the math you'll see that the speaker needs almost an amp (0.87A). Common 8-ohm speakers can be had in lower power ratings...A 1-watt 8-ohm needs only 0.33A.
