Sadly, highly unlikely.
Mounting the M2 on the top side would also result in some toasty operating temps for the SSD.

Maybe the've missed the fact that up-selling - by adding the official 256/512GB NVMe into the system, pretty much the same way as they are including a 32GB Raspberry Pi-branded SD card into the box - would have given them 'flexibility' right from the start.

Well, that been said, maybe my last comment on Pi500 as I will not get one for sure.
