It wouldn't just have no display? Are you absolutely sure you can say that this is their issue? Just curious about your logic.yes - I don't even need to do anything else - unplugging the HDD leads to a proper boot from SSD - no reboot neededDoes it boot ok if you disconnect the HDD?
Then the combination of the SSD and the HDD is drawing too much power/current from the Pi's USB ports, a powered hub is one solution or you could swap the HDD for a SATA SSD.
I really don't recommend live plugging or unplugging any USB device other than very low current devices such as mice or keyboards.
