I see, so as I understand it, once the raspberry pi OS has been installed on the Micro SD card then any other software has to be installed onto another card? So you cannot have the raspberry pi OS AND Volumio on the same machine?
RasPiOS is an Operating System.
Your RPi board can only RUN one Operating System at a time.
RasPiOS is a multi-user, multi-tasking Operating System. It can run many programs/applications/utilities at the same time.
You can have more than one Operating System installed on a microSD card, but only ONE can be running and in control of the RPi board at any one time.
PINN is an Operating System installer for the Raspberry Pi that allows multiple OSes to be installed on your SD card. At boot time, one of the installed OSes can be selected to boot into. Ref: viewtopic.php?t=142574
I suggest starting with the simple policy of 'One Operating System per microSD card' until you gain some familiarity with RPi systems.
You might also investigate whether the facilities provided by Volumio can be implemented under RasPiOS rather than as a stand-alone system.
