Camera board • Re: Setting WB with a grey card

Hi, and thanks for the question.

Yes, AWB is quite hard when there are many different things in a scene, and when some of the illuminants are hard to predict - and possibly not ones for which the camera was calibrated.

If you're able to capture DNG files of a Macbeth chart under all these different illuminants then it would be easy enough to generate another tuning file that might work better. Though that's not guaranteed - it is still basically trying to make stuff look "grey" subject to the calibration constraints, and depending on scene content, it can get skewed towards things that shouldn't be grey.

Alternatively, if you have DNG files with "known grey" things in them, then it's not too difficult in Python to calculate the correct white balance gains for the scene, and you could then apply them manually, or even edit the tuning file that you currently have. (Or you could probably find good enough values with a bit of concerted trial and error...!) Let us know if you'd like to try something like that. Thanks!
