This is why it is recommended to not only document what things you do to the system so you can refer to them later in a situation like this, but to also accomplish this by writing scripts that do all the software installation and configuration changes.

all of the usual places config files go, are permanently read-only
you must define the config using the special nixos syntax, which forces you to put it all in one place

and you can then copy that one thing to a new machine, run a single command, and instantly have the entire thing setup the identical way
