What are the characteristics of that USB device then? Brand, type, output of lsusb(the IDs of it),when using usb ports (pen drive)system stucks
You need another Linux box to get such info from that pen drive of course. e.g. boot a laptop with Linux from live distro.
Then what is on the pendrive? NTFS? partitions?
Does the Pi5 freeze when USB mouse is inserted?
You can try kernel8.img.
And connect serial console cable and set loglevel=8 so see what sort of freeze it is.
