Might be an idea to change the thermal_printer_camera.sh to save the raspi-still image to a file rather than piping it directly to the thermal printer. (Or onscreen preview?)
You can then check the saved file for brightness/exposure and maybe do test prints after adjusting the brightness/contrast in the file.
Also the raspi-still command may need adjusting to set the correct exposure.
Does the photo booth have lights to give constant illumination (or a flash)?
