That couldn't be possible, take a look at this guide i just found. it also connects to i2c but uses 5V to power it:''
And i only used the 5V for this specific lcd screen, for the rest only 3.3V

Sorry, don't have patience for reading any random links. Do you have a link to the I2C backpack you're using?
What I'm interested in is
- if there are I2C pull-ups on that board
- to which level the bus get's pulled
